Afrikaans child, 6, guards murdered dad

Six-year-old Afrikaans girl Monay Mouton guarded her murdered dad’s body through the night after he was shot dead by black gunmen inside the family home in Drie Riviere, Vereeniging. He headed the local Child-Welfare organisation. http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/6-jarige-10-uur-by-pa-se-lyk-20100930

Gloria Edwards, Beeld newspaper writes that the child’s aunt and trauma-psychology experts on the scene all described the child as ‘an incredibly brave girl’. Her murdered dad, accountant Christo Mouton, 54, was the head of the Child Welfare Group in Vereeniging, where he’d worked for years – and had in fact only recently been re-elected to another term. His sister said “everything he earned, he plowed back into helping the community.”

The unarmed Afrikaner was gunned down execution-style inside the family home in Vereeniging at 22:00. The black gunmen had also threatened Monay, demanding the ‘safe keys’ from the little girl. Her mom Coral Mouton, 35, also an accountant, was in Durban for business at the time of the attack. So after her dad’s murder, the child stayed awake all night next to her dad’s body until the black housekeeper showed up for work at around 7.:30am, writes Edwards. They looted very little of real value: a TV and some computers.

The murdered Afrikaner’s sister Carina Huntly wept bitterly while telling Edwards that her brother ‘was murdered for nothing’. She had still spoken to them at 9pm while the child was watching a story on TV with her dad. She called them again at 21;30 and her brother told her that he ‘was all set to go to bed.’ At 22:00, he was dead.

Mrs Huntly said Monay told her that she was awakened by ‘voices and lights and large men who demanded the safe-keys”. The child was unable to tell them where to find them, said her aunt. “We suspect that by that time, Christo was already shot dead. After the men fled with their loot, the little girl ran to her parents’ bedroom and found her dad dead on the floor. “She first tried to wake him up. But then she sat next to his body, falling asleep every once in a while,’ the aunt said.

“I think she realises now that he’s dead because later on she told me ‘My pappa now is with my ouma (grandmother).’ Eblockwatch’sspokesman - which responded to the emergency call - said the child was not injured but the traumatic experience was discussed with her by a trauma-expert to try and make her understand. Mr Mouton worked for Child-Welfare for years and was just re-elected for another term, said his sister. “Everything he earned he always plowed back into the community. He was a good person,’ she said.

SAPS captain Shado Mashobane said no-one was of course arrested. Traces were found indicating that the black gunmen may havebroken into the house by tearing out a window in Mr Mouton’s office, he said. Otherwise, the SAPS clearly haven’t got a clue as to where the murderers may have fled nor even whether they’d left by car or on foot. However judging from the stolen items: a TV and several desktop computers, they may have had difficulty running away while lugging such heavy items around? http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/6-jarige-10-uur-by-pa-se-lyk-20100930
