13-member armed Lesotho gang invades SA farm - one attacker killed by own comrade
13 armed Black attackers from Lesotho raided a Freestate farm in broad daylight on oc tober 20 2010. One of the attackers was hit and killed by his fellow terrorists when they were firing shots over the cattle.
In the process they also stole a R35,000 stud bull from the owner, Sarel de Jager. Farm manager Coen Scheepers said the armed gang 'attacked in V-formation". They had shotguns and probably also handguns.
Scheepers was phoned at the dentist by a security guard and rushed back to the farm while phoning the police. He found the body of a black Lesotho citizen with a knob-kierie next to him, however it is believed the man was shot dead by shots fired by his own comrades.
The organised farm-invasion took place only a day before the national police chief Bheki Cele was scheduled to visit the Ficksburg border post 'to establish the extent of the challenge set by the police at this site'.
Lesotho citizens regularly carry out raids against South African farmers, said Scheepers.
"These guys have now gone too far. The government does boggerol to protect the border with Lesotho despite a recent settlement to do so with the Free State Agricultural Union.
Nothing has been done...' Pinkie Craven of the organisation said they were 'very concerned about the situation on the border. Lesotho citizens start fires on Free State farms so that they can graze their cattle on the green shoots. The border roads are not maintained despite an agreement by the government that this would be done. When there is no road and no fencing, patrolling the border becomes very difficult'.
