Man's throat slit in 'hit'

Durban - An intruder slit the throat of a 56-year-old businessman in Durban's Morningside area and stabbed his girlfriend in the head on Wednesday morning, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said the Johannesburg-born man and his 34-year-old partner were asleep in their flat on Bridge View Avenue when the intruder entered at about 02:00.

"A neighbour was awoken by the woman's screams and spotted a man leaving the flat through a window and contacted the police."

Police arrived at the scene and found the couple lying in a pool of blood.

The man - who owns a business in Richards Bay - was declared dead at the scene while his girlfriend was rushed to a local hospital in a critical but stable condition.

"It seemed like nothing was stolen as a laptop and cellphone were found lying on the floor," Mngomezulu said.

Although robbery had been ruled out, police were unable to confirm if it was a hit. Police were investigating how the suspect gained entry into the flats.

"We noted that the block of flats has a high-fenced wall with razor wire at the top. It is believed that the suspect might have had a duplicate key as the gates are electronic."

Police were unable to release the name of the flats or the names of the victims.

Murder and attempted murder cases were being investigated. No arrests had been made yet.
