Unarmed Stephen Coetzee, 22, murdered in his driveway Umdoni Grove, Warner Beach, Amanzimtoti

Description THE murder of Stephen Coetzee, 22, an Afrikaner motorbike enthusiast from Amanzimtoti in KZN, has sparked outrage in the south Durban suburb. ---------------------------- Mandy Singleton wrote on the Toti-Crime facebook page: -- " An update on the late Steven Coetzee to stop the malicious rumours making the rounds....On Friday, 11 May, my son, Jacques, went to his friend Steven Coetzee's house, about 2 blocks away from where we stay. About 15 minutes later (17H30) I received a call from Jacques. He was hysterical and all he said was “Get an ambulance, Steven has been shot and is lying bleeding between my feet I phoned the SAP in Toti………………No-one answered I phoned 911 …………….. I received a lecture about how illegal it is for a MTN user to misuse this number .. I eventually hung up as I could no longer listen to the droning voice, stating the obvious, with obviously no intention of connecting me to a “human” I phone 10111……….. I was given some options (press 1 for an emergency, press 2 for blablabla….) I pressed one and listened to some music until I felr that my head will explode and put the phone down. Then I started the entire process again, but at the same time getting my father to phone from his phone…..any emergency number he could possible find………….. he too had no luck In-between calls I phoned my daughter to also try and get hold of someone. To make a long, agonising, horrible story short, the ambulance is still to come………. One police vehicle pitched up when the paramedic from Netcare that my daughter happens to know and phoned in desperation, picked up something about the incident on their radio’s…… Anyway, I needed to tell you the above as I need you to be aware of the fact that “WE ARE ON OUR OWN”… there is ZERO hep for us out there, so do not be fooled. After waiting for help for nearly 30 minutes, Steven was taken to hospital with a car by Jacques and two neigbours. He died after 2 hours. He was 23, finished his studies last year, started working this year and had big plans for the future.I sat in the bus this morning listening to the distorted versions of what happened, so here is true story, for those interested. Jacques got to Steven’s house and they went to the garage behind the house, where the always fooled around with an old Volkswagen Steven was “building up” His father, Steven Snr, joined them. At 17H30 a man came strolling casually up the driveway and around the corner to where the 3 were standing. They were quite surprised and Steven Snr asked the man if they can be of assistance to him or if he is looking for someone maybe……….. The man pulled out a gun and waved it in the the faces of the 3, instructing them to still and to stand still. Which they did. At the same time, while they had the gun in their faces, another 2 men strolled up the driveway and headed to the backdoor which is about 3 meters away. Steven Snr’s girlfriend, his young son and his girlfriend’s 5 year old daughter was in the house.Seeing them going towards his house and family, Steven Snr OBVIOUSLY panicked as we all know what would have happened next if they were allowed to enter the house unobstructed, he picked up a “tool”, similar to a crow bar and threw it towards the 2 men entering the house. The two men, surprised that they are actually being confronted, turned away from the front door and ran down the driveway. The gunman kept the gun pointed at the 3 men but also ran backwards down the driveway. When a “bang” was heard, the three ”victims” started walking forward to see what is happening. The garage is around the corner, so the driveway is not visible from there. What they saw was this: Two men ran and got into a Silver Toyota Verso that was parked on the opposite side of the road. One man was already in the driver’s seat and one man in the passenger’s seat of Steven Snr’s car. (Which he only got about 3 months ago after his previous car was HIJACKED!!!)The gunman was in the boot of the car.The “bang” that was heard was as a result of the driver reversing into a small step and bursting the back tyre.At this time Steven Snr ran to the car and trapped the man behind the wheel. Steven Jnr was next to reach the car. At this stage the gunman got out of the boot and point blank shot Steven Jnr through the head. They all ran away. I am going to spare you the details as they are more horrible than you can ever imagine.Apart from losing a boy that was like a son to me, I now have a son that can “crack” at any moment. Please, do not be in denial, no-one is safe in this country now. Not even in your own house or back-yard... Rest in peace Steven! https://www.facebook.com/mandy.singleton -------------------------------------- Hundreds of residents met on Monday May 15 2012 to discuss ways to tackle 'crime'. Stephen Coetzee, 22, was shot dead outside his home on Friday evening as he was fixing his car. A group of black males approached him in his driveway in Umdoni Grove, Warner Beach, and threatened Coetzee with a gun before trying to steal his Ford Fiesta. However the black driver of the gang's vehicle then reversed into a wall, at which point Coetzee threw a spanner at them. He was shot in the head. He was taken to Kingsway Hospital and died later that day. No arrests had been made. About 300 residents met yesterday and, assisted by the private Crime Community Prevention Organisation (CCPO), put together a petition which will be handed to the area's police station commander. Ward councillor Andre Beetge said if hadn't been for private law enforcement agencies' "tremendous difference" there would be "anarchy". He called for greater community participation in fighting crime. Beetge urged residents to get involved in fighting crime, but emphasised that they should not take the law into their own hands. "What they should do is turn the talk into action by getting to know their neighbours and acquainting themselves with their immediate environment." "People always think: 'It's not going to happen to me,' " said Quinton Rutherford, a CCPO committee member. "Hijacking is not the only problem; housebreakings are also a problem." --------------- Beetge urged residents to get involved in fighting crime, but emphasised that they should not take the law into their own hands.
